// who am i?

Norman Rockwell, one of the greatest american painters of the 20th century did this self portrait and entitled it “triple self portrait”. what a fitting realisation of the self. who am i? a question i’ve asked myself many times. and when, in a moment, i think i understand, suddenly from left field a curve ball hits me squarely and then i don’t know anymore.

but maybe the reality is in this painting.

the first interesting thing about this painting, is that its a self portrait where the self is turned away from us.
the right top corner is the ideal self – with pictures of those whom rockwell admired and aspired towards – van gogh is there, rembrant.
then there is the man in the mirror (any association to michael jackson is purely conincidental. hee hee) – he is old, you can barely even see his eyes because his glasses are so thick; the face is tired;the cheeks sagging.
then there is the man in the painting. younger; the pipe is erect (if u must read into that, go ahead, freud would be happy!… and maybe mrs rockwell too! :) ); virile, strong.

and maybe in his portrait, is me. wanting to be somebody significant, yet there are days when it just seems too tiring, but there are other days when strength wells up, and my eyebrows are raised a little in anticipation, with hope.

thank you, norman.

i wonder who will wake up for tomorrow’s day
