i don’t normally take the MRT, but the other day, i took the NE line from Dhoby Ghaut and had about 2 min to stand before my driverless train would reach. so in those two mins, with my iPod on, i looked around. my eyes soon found this:
at first glance, it doesn’t seem anything more than singapore’s favourite tv character Phua Choo Kang teaching singaporeans how to use the trains in a civil manner.
but if you were to look closer, you would find the irony of what was going on:
the ad on the sides of the doors were about speaking good english, and yet right smack in the center of that was PCK going, “don’t play, play” !!!
i didn’t know if i should laugh or shake my head.
and so the debate on singapore english must continue on.

i am almost certain you spelt PCK’s name wrongly.
therein goes the 2nd layer of irony in your sentence “singapore’s favourite tv character…”
you so smart ah, so many layers of hidden irony.
